THEME

The theme of our first volume is identity.  The Queer, Disabled identity is rich as it is complex. It is both freeing and suppressed, swinging between a vibrant medium of expression to a weapon used against us without our permission.


Think of the times you’ve had to misgender yourself or suppress your tic. Think of the tightness in your chest when you feared your identity would cost you your home, or your confusion when your doctor labeled your symptoms as hysteria.


Now, recall the first time you dyed your hair, the cursive loops of your chosen name, or the jolt through your fingers when you signed for the first time.


Remember the time you found the words to describe who you are.


WHAT WE LOOK FOR:

We are looking for Queer and Disabled creatives to submit art and written works on expression, non-conformity, and the barriers you’ve encountered on your journey to self-acceptance. Your submission might look something like: 


  • A self portrait with your mobility aid 
  • A research study on trans healthcare inequality
  • A critique of autism representation on TV 
  • A painting showcasing your surgical scars
  • An op-ed denouncing censorship in schools
  • Prose navigating gender identity and expression
  • An abstract collage representing your flavor of neurodiversity 
  • Or a long-form poem about imposter syndrome. 


IMPORTANT NOTE

While your submission does not have to cover both queerness and disability, we heavily prefer submissions from writers and artists who are both Queer and Disabled. Additionally, our mission would not be complete without contributions from other intersectional identities. We especially encourage Black and Indigenous people, Immigrants, multilingual writers, and other historically oppressed races and ethnicities to participate in the creation of our magazine.


We will not accept work that promotes stereotypes or pushes damaging ideology.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Please submit your work along with your preferred name and pronouns to thesnapdragonmagazine@gmail.com by October 15, 2025. Our editorial team will get back to you within a few days with the next steps. Unfortunately, we may not be able to accept all submissions. 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • You must be 18+ to submit.
  • Please submit all written pieces as a Google Doc, Word Document, or PDF. Word count should be 2000 or less.
  • Please submit your artwork as a png or svg. 
  • Please submit your art with a 200 word max artist statement. 
  • Not-safe-for-work subject matters (such as gore, depictions of nude bodies, etc.) are permitted as submissions are 18+. That being said, we may ask for additional age verification for these types of submissions.
  • Any heavily triggering content should be marked with a content or trigger warning in your submission email. Please reference the Trigger Warning Database for more information. 
  • The use of generative AI such as ChatGPT or OpenArt is not permitted.

A MESSAGE TO CONTRIBUTORS:

Unfortunately, because of the magazine's age and limited funds, we are not able to offer compensation to contributors at this time. However, we plan on providing free copies of the print version to anyone who has been published. Additionally, your work will be featured online at no cost. As time goes on, we hope to provide both free copies to and proper compensation for artists and writers whose works have been accepted for publication.


We expect the print version of volume 1 to be completed by December 2025. You will receive an email asking if you are interested in receiving a copy upon acceptance of your submission. Happy creating!
